CHAKRA DAM

The dam is built across  Chakra River in 1985. The water flowing from kolluru and kodachadri is stored in chakra dam and is supplied for irrigation purpose. The dam is in a small town called chakra Nagar near to Shimoga city. The dam was built to balance the reservoir and to feed into the linganmakki reservoir. The dam is fully built with rock fills

 Salient features of the dam

  The top level of dam -587.57m

  Length of dam -570.00m

  Height of dam -79.00m

  Max.water level -584m

  Full reservoir level -579.12m

  Max.draw down level-563.8m

  Catchment area -58.60sq.m

  Average rainfall -7620mm

  Gross capacity of F.R.L-222.60m.cum

  Net capacity -132.92m.cum

The spillway used in chakra dam is chute spillway. It’s used to supply excess water from behind the dam down a smooth decline into the river below

SAVEHAKLU DAM

This dam is also built across  Chakra River originated at the peak of kodachadri Savehaklu dam is 6km away from chakra dam. This dam is an earthen dam and constructed with soil fill in 1980. A layer of rock is placed to avoid the destruction .the purpose of this dam is to store and divert river water towards linganmakki that is sharavathi power station to generate electricity.

Salient Features of Dam:

  Length of dam -633m

  Maximum height above foundation -53m

  Total volume content of dam -1578TCM

  Catchment area-48.11 sq km

  Annual rainfall-6350mm

  Full reservoir level-582mcum

  Net capacity of reservoir-124.97mcum

SHARAVATHI POWER STATION

The sharavathi hydroelectric project was started to tap the electricity generating potential of the river. There are 3 power generation stations:

  The sharavathi generating station with 10 units and an installed capacity of 1035MW

  The linganmakki dam powerhouse with 2 units has an installed capacity of 55MW

  The Gerusoppa dam project with 4 units of 60MW  each

The power station visited by us was sharavathi generating station with  10 units and an installed capacity of 1035MW. The water from the Sharavathi River is drawn to produce electricity. The potential energy of river water is converted to kinetic energy and then into mechanical energy.  The Pelton type of turbine is used to generate electricity. This type of turbine used since the water source has a higher hydraulic head at a low flow rate.

Salient features:

  Type of turbine: Pelton turbine

  Speed -300 rpm

  Num of jet -6

  Output power -140000 bhp

  Transformer –step-up step-down transformer of 7 to 11 kW

  Per machine capacity -103.5MW

  Software used by KPCL –SCAL-R

WATER TREATMENT PLANT

The water treatment plant which involves implementation of a water purification plant in the vijayapur  district.  The plant is under Zilla Panchayath, vijayapur whose capacity is of 2.66MLD (Million Liter per Day). There we saw the following treatment units.

Secondary Treatment: In the secondary treatment plant, jack wells are provided to accumulate water from the surface source i.e., Krishna river which is a concrete structure and constructed to provide clean water, free from pollution, sand or any objectionable floating materials.  Water from jack well is future conveyed to the water treatment plant, vijayapur with the help of motors and pumps.

Tertiary Treatment: Here we came across a rectangular sedimentation tank and aeration tank.Where this sedimentation tank is of continuous flow which allows the suspended particles in suspension to settle down under the effect of gravity. The particle which is settled becomes sediment which is in turn known as sludge which will be removed and cleaned periodically. The coagulants will be added in adequate quantity.

Aeration tank is a treatment unit where the dissolved gasses are removed by pumping air into the tank connected to the venturi meter which consists of the throat to measure the quantity of discharge.

READY MIX CONCRETE PLANT

Ready-mix concrete is concrete that is manufactured in a batch plant according to asset engineered mix design. The batch plant combines a precise amount of rock, sand, water and cement together by weight. The half mixed concrete is carried to the site by transit trucks.

Ready mix concrete plant in Ainapur, Vijayapur, in this plant not only RMC is available there is also pre-stressed electric pole and pipes cast

TOWN PLANNING

Art of shaping and guiding the physical growth of the town creating buildings and environments to meet the various needs such as social, cultural, economic and recreational etc., is called town planning.

Bagalkot town has an approximate population of 1.30 lakh substantial portion of Bagalkot town gets submerged in the backwater of almatti reservoir.  For implementation R  and  R project of Bagalkot town,  the state government has enacted special legislation called “Bagalkot town development authority”. This town is designed to sustain for 1000years. It’s a very well planned town by collecting the various data’s from several years .here we got to see the placement of manholes and drainage system adopted. Layout plan and plot detail is given by Bagalkot town development authority

SUPA DAM

Supa dam is built across the Kali Nadi in Uttar Kannada district. It is the 2nd  largest dam of Asia which has 2 degrees i.e. which as the curve in both directions vertically and horizontally. The powerhouse at foot of dam has 2 electricity generators of 50MW each. The purpose of the dam is the production of power

Salient feature:

  Type of dam: concrete gravity dam

  Height :101m

  Length :332m

  Total capacity :4178000000m3

  catchment area :1057sq.km

  the turbine used: Francis turbine

  num of turbine: 2

  installed capacity :100MW(2*50)

  Hydraulic head: 72m

 SYNTHERI ROCKS

Syntheri rock in Dandeli wildlife sanctuary is monolithic granite structure having a height of 300 ft. The river Kaneri that flows at this passes along the side of this rock.

On the way to this rock, there are various other rocks placed with their details. These are the rocks available in the forests of Dandeli.

7 Free Coaching Classes

FREE COACHING CLASS

At Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, free evening coaching classes are arranged to such students who need additional inputs on regular subjects. Coaching classes are conducted by experienced and highly dedicated faculties from the Basic Science & Engineering departments which commences from the second week of every fresh semester. Faculties make learning process enjoyable for students who lag behind and find difficulty in learning. Coaching classes begins by identifying strengths, weaknesses and learning style of the student so that a best and the most effective teaching ideas and methodologies would be adopted. Since the approach followed in the coaching classes is different than that of the regular classes, these coaching classes helps our students to develop interest in the studies, clear the doubts on confusing concepts and strengthens the fundamental concepts. Regular practice exams are conducted to help students evaluate themselves on regular basis and to know the effectiveness of these classes. It is observed that students who have attended coaching classes have increased their confidence at studies and have excelled in the VTU semester examinations. Also this system has been highly appreciated by the parents.
